A History Worth Celebrating
Step back in time and discover the rich legacy of Downham Hall—a manor shaped by centuries of stories, resilience, and transformation.
Downham Hall has stood as a quiet witness to centuries of history. In 1574, it was home to Edward Atslowe, a daring supporter of Mary Queen of Scots, who survived imprisonment in the Tower of London. From 1723 to 1821, the estate was the seat of the De Beauvoir family, a name that lives on today in one of our most elegant rooms. Though the Hall has evolved through the years, it still overlooks the same rolling Essex hills and historic moat that have defined this estate for generations.
A Labour of Love
In 2017, we (Christina and Andrew) discovered the potential in what were then two semi-detached houses and embarked on a mission to merge them back into one magnificent destination.
This was a labour of love, all the more adventurous with three small children in tow. After years of careful renovation, the result is a space that honours its Georgian character while offering the warmth and comfort of a truly welcoming family-run venue.

Our 2 AA Rosette North Wing Restaurant serves everything from a leisurely breakfastand relaxed lunch to candlelit dinners and our much-loved Sunday roast, all crafted from the finest locally sourced Essex produce.
We also offer our quintessentially British afternoon tea, and throughout the year host a calendar of special events including Mother’s Day afternoon tea, murder mystery evenings, and more.
